This Christmas we knew we’d have to do something for the children affected by Hurricane Sandy. This would require a lot of planning…What could we do? Where? How many toys would we need and how many volunteers would it take?

There were lots of questions to ask but It all seemed to come together really well when our friends from God’s Pit Crew, Spirit FM and WSLS 10 in Virginia called to say they had collected toys to bring to the children of NY.

Our friends at Coney Island Gospel Assembly were thrilled to let us transform their supply tent into a winter wonderland. Actually, once the volunteers were set up and busy wrapping gifts, DJ Alphonix arrived to set up his sound system and started playing Christmas music. If that wasn’t enough, even Santa showed up with his top elf and suddenly, it was as if we had stepped into the North Pole, at Santa’s workshop.

Oh, we can’t forget the cookies! It wouldn’t be a Christmas party unless the smell of gingerbread cookies fills the air. Hand of Hope Ministries made that happen, they sent the resources needed to put this event over the top. Every child received a beautifully wrapped gift, a personally decorated Gingerbread cookie and was able to take pictures with Santa and his helpers.

What a day! Hundreds of children lined the street with their parents to visit Santa. Can you imagine it? Well, lets do one better, let’s show you what it looked like. The photo gallery below gives you a glimpse into this Winter Wonderland on Coney Island.

“Stand up, on this Thanksgiving Day, stand upon your feet. Believe in man. Soberly and with clear eyes, believe in your own time and place. There is not, and there never has been a better time, or a better place to live in.”

~Phillips Brooks

As many of you know The Legacy Center, in the wake of Superstorm Sandy, led the way in disaster relief in the Rockaways, Coney Island, Staten Island and beyond. Our efforts have been covered by local newspapers and news channels. The work our volunteers were doing on Coney Island was even broadcast live during the Mayor’s press conference post Hurricane Sandy making landfall.

Despite the devastation Sandy left behind we know we have so much to be thankful for. At The Legacy Center we are grateful for volunteers that would give up vacation time to help another family in distress by sorting supplies, cleaning homes, feeding the hungry, driving trucks…and the list goes on. We are thankful for the generous, private donations made via our website, mailed in from other cities and dropped off at our office by community members. We are also grateful for the organizations and corporations that have come along side us during this time to provide the supplies desperately need.

While we are busy in our efforts we are not too busy to celebrate Thanksgiving. In fact, what better time than now to host a Thanksgiving meal? This year, we are working in partnership with Christ Tabernacle’s Bushwick and Glendale campuses to host a Thanksgiving Brunch on Thanksgiving Day at Wyckoff Manor. We have also been invited to partner with the Bushwick United Methodist Parish to support their congregation as they reach out to individuals in shelters in the Bushwick, Brooklyn area.

How can you participate?

WHO? We are looking for a few My Legacy volunteers.

It is now day 7 following Hurricane Sandy’s arrival in our hometown. Many are still trying to process the destruction in the wake of this so called “superstorm”. Communities have been destroyed, families are separated from loved ones, power is still out for over 1 million residents of NY and the property loss in some neighborhoods resembles some war torn cities. We could never have imagined such devastation but we were prepared, prepared to serve the people. Because of the vision and generosity of donors The Legacy Center’s (TLC) warehouse was stocked with basic supplies and a truck to mobilize them, allowing TLC to be the first organization to respond.

Within 24 hours of Sandy making landfall TLC had a team on the ground at Rockaway Beach. With the support of the NYPD and the National Guard teams of volunteers led by Jordan Durso, TLC’s Executive Director, and Diana Denis, Operations Director, TLC was able to provide emergency resources in affected neighborhoods with water, socks, diapers, toiletries and groceries; supplies needed when power is out, grocery stores are closed and the ocean just ravaged your home. We’ve even deployed volunteers with resources to Queens College where a temporary shelter has been set up to distribute diapers and baby food there.

Additional distribution points were set up in:

Far Rockaway – Beach 20 and Beach 49

Rockaway Beach- Beach 86 and Beach 94

Breezy Point

Coney Island’s MCU Park

Staten Island – Midland Beach

To date, we have distributed:

12,400 pairs of winter gloves

1,800 pairs of socks

4,320 hats

6,750 packs of diapers

over 10 palettes of bottled water

2,000+ pounds of non-perishable food

800 warm blankets

You may have heard about us or even seen us on the news; while we had no idea the eye in the sky was watching it was a pretty neat split screen — volunteers unloading trucks during NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s press conference. We will continue to send out teams and resources for as long as the community needs us and as long as donations continue to come in.

The Legacy Center and an army of volunteers have been on the ground delivering aid and relief to victims of Hurricane Sandy. TLC has gone into the bay areas most affected by the hurricane: Far Rockaway, Beach Channel, Breezy Point and Coney Island. Teams of TLC are at our warehouse loading trucks with water, boxes of food, buckets of toiletries, hats, gloves, socks and boxes of diapers. We’ve also opened up the warehouse for anyone affected by the Hurricane who is in need of resources.

Throughout the week we’ve received donations from other organizations including two 18-wheeler trucks from Gods Pit Crew filled with water, toiletries and all sorts of supplies. To date, we’ve sent out 7 trucks and 2 vans out filled with supplies. In addition, two trucks were supplied by NYC School safety, which proved to be a huge help, as they delivered supplies to additional neighborhoods. After all was said and done we’ve been able to meet the needs of hundreds of affected people but we know this is only the beginning as we continue to hear the stories from those affected.

We received much coverage from media outlets such as NY1, ABC, Univision and Star 99.1 for being one of the first responders on the ground. We are thankful about what we’ve been able to do thus far, but we still need your help. Donations are greatly appreciated. Below is a list of items that have been on high demand. As always volunteers are always needed…it’s all hands on deck!

We pray you are safe in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. We know that thousands in our city have been affected, including some of our friends and family members. Within our own TLC community we know that one member’s home was looted, at least three other families lost their entire first floor and another family lost both of their vehicles due to the storm. This storm landed in New York with a fury this generation has never seen.

The Legacy Center quickly switched gears to meet the needs of the people. We dispatched our trucks to bring relief to those who were hit in the Rockaways, within the first 24 hours. Within the next 48 hours we had trucks with supplies and teams of volunteers on the ground in both Staten Island and Coney Island. We have been moved to help the 8.4 million in our city because every one of those 8.4 million matters to us.

We have already received calls and emails from many friends asking, “How can we help?” If you or your friends and family would like to help we invite you to join us at The Legacy Center Warehouse. We are there daily preparing emergency kits, loading trucks and setting up distribution points throughout the city.

Among other things, we are expecting several shipments from 18-wheeler trucks loaded with supplies from friends of The Legacy Center outside of the tri-state area. Volunteers will be needed to help unload those trucks and prepare our trucks with supplies and to join us in the affected communities to distribute the relief supplies.

The Legacy Center Warehouse is located at 1633 Centre Street between Cypress and Wyckoff Avenue’s. You can also call at 347.292.4TLC or continue to check this website, www.tlcnyc.org/mylegacy and our social media sites for updates, pictures and videos.
